I didn't have occasion to wear this lovely until a couple of weeks ago when I decided that it would be perfect for an outdoor wedding. I found it in the Spring at a local thrift store and while it wasn't love at first sight when I pulled it from the rack, I was absolutely smitten once in the fitting room. This is easily one of the most feminine pieces I own. It's no secret that I love dresses, but there's something about the nude silk and black lace detail that makes this one extra special.

Back in the suns good graces after a week of cold and rain, reminiscent of what the Midwest must experience in early fall; I couldn't wait to get dressed up again. Suede heels obviously don't work well in rainy weather and I'd sooner don a pair of boyfriend jeans and a chunky cardigan than freeze my legs in this metallic mini, but when the streets dried and things warmed up a bit, these two pieces were top of mind.

Silk blouses are not a staple in my closet, but my love for thrifting has conjured up a desire for rich fabrics and vintage pieces, like never before. My mother spotted this blouse at Goodwill- Lucky Me! I think those might actually be the original faux pearl buttons, a detail I find quite charming. Interestingly enough, I found the skirt a week or two prior, on sale for $10 from $138- though I fell in love with the antique-style, tiered lace, long before I even saw the price tag. And the bag? It's one I was sure had slipped out of my grasp years ago at full retail. Fortunately, a good memory (brand/style name) and eBay served to reunite us at 70% off.

Whether in a hotel, a guest room or my own home, I always have something on the nightstand that brings me comfort. More often than not, a book or candle does the trick but as of late, a couple of fun pieces have found a space near the very place I find rest.

A small but intricate Eiffel tower figurine, a symbol of all things chic and elegant. Also, a reminder to always keep my passport current. A small journal with a cute twist on a common adage. I often jot down memorable quotes from whichever book I'm reading, moments I'm grateful for, ideas for gifts etc. A small hand... simply put, I was amused by it and still am ;)

Am I the only one who has become obsessed with red jeans and trousers? I was tearing through Goodwill stores this summer trying to find a pair that wouldn't break the bank, just so that I could try this Fall trend at a discount. To my delight, I found these for $4 and given that my hind quarter has gained some volume over the summer, the fit is comfortable and not confining. I had about 20 ideas for styling these but I figured I'd start with the ubiquitous striped top for this post.

I spotted this dress at H&M back in July while I was in New York for the Alexander McQueen Exhibit. It was hanging all alone on a rack in the middle of the store and against my better judgement (it wasn't on sale), I tried it on. It has a sort of ethereal look and feel about it that I absolutely adore and the length is perfect for flats. I can see it paired with a rhinestone headband for a summer night dinner date or with flip-flops and a ponytail for Sunday Brunch with friends. While I'm a bargain shopper by nature, there are certain pieces worth making an exception for. This is one of them.

If you ask me, the best part of a three-day weekend is a four-day work week. That having been said, I was perfectly fine with rising and shining this morning. Catching up on the things I set aside in favor of lounging and dining this weekend, goes much smoother with a view and some fresh morning air.

These photos were taken at The Westgate Hotel in downtown San Diego a couple of weeks ago. I worked a bit, I relaxed, I watched a little television, I took a bubble bath (yes, bubble bath is one of the toiletries provided in the rooms). Frankly, I was genuinely sad to check out of this lovely, spacious, unique space.

If you were anywhere near a rounder in the back, far left corner of the Nordstrom Rack in Denver Colorado yesterday- you may very likely have been witness to a crazy girl jumping wildly in place while simultaneously trying to muffle a roar of cheers and laughter!! A huge part of what makes this score so spectacular is that unlike some of my other epic finds, I've never actually made an effort to track these down at a discount.

I've admired the J Brand Houlihan for months, from afar- in every fashion publication and celebrity lifestyle magazine. Having always been a fan of cargos, the skinny low-rise cut, combined with the detailed placement of the stitching and the extra long ankle zipper, made these the Holy Grail of all cargos for me. An audible gasp, followed by a mass text to those who could empathize with my euphoric moment and I was deliriously racing to the register. Unexpected Retail Mission Accomplished!!

Ladies, a trip to your local NR would be worth the gas if you've had your eye on these. Amazing fit and a great find at 60% off Rack tag- $35 total, out the door (Original Retal $230)

To The Rescue

Over the past three weeks, I've been commuting back and from from Southern California to Northern California for work and my complexion is starting to show signs of airline fatigue. It feels as though the altitude is literally sucking the water out of my skin.

I'm not one to be drawn in by advertisements, but after coming across an acknowledgement from Allure for Garnier Nutritioniste's Moisture Rescue Gel-Cream, I literally schlepped myself down five city blocks to the nearest drugstore to grab a jar.

Turns out all of those glowing 5-Star reviews were spot on. This is the lightest and most refreshing moisturizer I've ever used. I could see and feel a difference after only three days. In the past I've been bad about moisturizing in the evenings, but this has been a welcome addition to both my nightly and pre-board routines.

After putting it off and putting it off, I finally went through my bag last night. The weekly clean-out was delayed due to travel, which resulted in at least five extra pounds of junk. The receipts, wrapers, airline peanuts, boarding passes and loose change were all expected- but finding six hotel key cards from a span of 14 days, surprised me.

Life has definitely kept me on my toes since the first of the year, but every second has been packed with laughter, memories and new friends.

On Wednesday, I'll be visiting my God Daughter's First Grade Class to read 'Oh, The Places You'll Go!' in honor of Dr. Seuss's Birthday. I found it rather apropos that this was the book selected for me.

Friday morning I received a call from my sister asking me to meet her in Vegas, two hours later I was on a plane. It was the perfect storm of good will, good timing, and good company. Sometimes you just have to shake it off; throw a pair of underwear, some alka seltzer, and a box of Godiva chocolates into your bag and GO!

The spontaneous girls weekend in Vegas was truly a delightful experience in every way. The weather was perfect, the service spectacular, the food delicious.... and no, we did not lose any money :)

Living in Los Angeles, I never met a food truck I didn't like..... but a Fashion Truck Oh My!! I almost wept when I discovered that it actually made its way right to the corner of my former workplace on Sawtelle and Olympic. How the French did I miss this?? It's as if it was coming for me and for the record, I would happily forgo red velvet chocolate chip pancakes just for a chance to sneak a peak at what's behind those doors. Such a brilliant concept! A dear friend who I hadn't seen in almost eight months, surprised me on Sunday night when she presented me with this lovely box of gifts. Call it laziness, but being dressed and out the door in one slip of a garment, just feels good. Rompers and jumpsuits take the guesswork out of ensembles and that's a life-saver. Though the weather has become cooler since that first photo was taken, I still find myself reaching for a 'onesie' in a pinch. I layer a biker jacket or cardigan over it and no one is the wiser.

As a child, when the time for school supplies came, I was most excited about the Crayons. I don't know about anyone else, but I was supremely excited if the 64-Count box of Crayolas- with the built-in sharpener, landed in the cart. My friend Danielle and I compared notes one day and she said that she used to go straight for the Silver and Gold, avoiding Cornflower, Sepia, and Burnt Sienna- as those were her least favorites in the bunch. I recalled with great clarity, always reaching for the Cerulean. This tunic is a bit of a deeper shade, but I love the richness of it.

I titled this post 'Royal T' because my dear friend Tami, who is a striking redhead, looks fabulous in this shade of blue and each time I pull it from my closet, I'm often reminded of her.

Hello Darlings! How did everyone spend their weekend? I made my moms killer meatballs, got caught up on some reading, and did a little thrifting. Found a couple of beakers at my local Discovery Shop- a creative way to display the tools that put me together in the morning and a good solution for getting things out of the drawer and within arms reach.

The past two days were equal parts productive and relaxing. Off to catch 60 Minutes and The Women Who Dress America, with a glass of white and a chenille throw for comfort.

The three-day weekend was exceptional in every way, but I promised myself that I wouldn't leave the house, spend a dime, or lift a finger for the next two days. So far I've been true to my word, but a lunch-hour mini haul may have had something to do with my new-found enthusiasm to lay low and save.

I'm sure I'm not the only one flipping through the gargantuan Fall Preview issues of all of the major fashion publications this month- and setting eyes on utility jackets, dresses and trousers on nearly everyone. Frankly, this is a trend that should excite us all. It's versatile, inexpensive and requires minimal maintenance; no dry-cleaning, delicate cycle, or ironing required.

I meant what I said about staying below my wallet's radar for the weekend, but I don't think a quick trip into my local thrift store on a Friday afternoon for a $10 jacket- should be counted against me. It was a weekday, it was inexpensive, it was on my Fall 'Must-Have' list and I went straight back to the office to eat the lunch I packed that morning, immediately after. No harm, no foul... sort of ;)

I'm rarely disappointed when I convince myself to ease out of my comfort zone and into an element of fashion that I wouldn't normally be drawn to. It's usually a silhouette or a style that meets my resistance, but this season it was as simple as a color. For years I've shied away from yellow- and while I can't recall when or why it started, I've successfully overcome my aversion. Several pieces in this lively hue caught my eye this summer; a few even made their way into my closet.

My besties snuck up on me late Friday night and it was THE MOST glorious surprise anyone could ever ask for! As always and in all things, their timing is impeccable. We stayed up 'til dawn, stuffed ourselves to the gills with Cuban pastries in the morning, shopped beach-side in the afternoon, roared with laughter over a pitcher of Sangria in the evening and cruised the city in style on a blissfully, lazy Sunday morning.

I think it's pretty safe to say that 'Nudes' aren't going anywhere. Everything about this subtle, flattering hue screams: SEXY! I’m always thrilled when an article of clothing that I had the good sense to hold on to, comes back around- proving itself to be timeless. I’m a little less pleased when a closet purge goes awry and the foresight required to see something as a staple, escapes me. I’m ashamed to admit that a perfectly worn-in denim jacket, fell victim to the donation pile last year and I’ve never forgiven myself. Fortunately, the kind people at American Eagle not only make fabulous jeans, but the perfect jacket as well. It was love at first sight of this lightweight, weathered denim and the small studded detail was enough to make me swoon. Strong enough to make an impact, subtle enough to go the distance.

Nope, not getting married :) Just sitting here thinking about the fresh and crisp color scheme that lends itself to all things nautical. Try as I might, I couldn't muster anything 4th of July inspired, the stars escaped me and the stripes- well, they're just not a good idea at the moment. Maybe there's something buried in my closet that'll suit tomorrow's festivities. . .one can hope. In this sunny, blissful interim- a voluminous skirt, a stack of magazines and a bowl of raspberry gelato will suffice.

My Love-to-Hate relationship with flats has been well-documented here, but I’m so excited to have finally found an equivalent I can agree with. . .oxfords. I don’t know how this trend slipped past me, but I’m glad I caught it in time to find a pair that I like.

The formal cut and laces make them feel more refined than a regular ballet flat and the crackled, metallic leather make them diverse enough to pair with most anything in my closet; dresses, skirts, jeans, trousers. Very exciting! Best of all, they were a gift :) The summer is looking good!!

There was a particular morning a few months back, when I awoke in the worst kind of funk. I dragged myself through the day, forcing a smile and willing myself to stay focused. Finally on the drive home, I glanced over at my phone- and realized that every single person that I hold near and dear, had reached out to me that day. I remembered that a co-worker treated me to lunch that afternoon and recalled that someone who played an integral part in a recent promotion, payed me a special visit just to say 'Hello'. It sometimes slips my mind to stop and look for the Blessings each day, but when I do- I'm never disappointed.

I rarely buy a garment or even an accessory without first picturing it with something I already own, but every once in awhile something slips through the cracks; these silver-detailed, cobalt suede pumps were one of them. I came upon this lovely silk maxi dress at Loehmann's a couple of weeks back. It was just one of the stops on my frenzied, marathon-run through LA trying to put together my idea of the most perfect wardrobe for a tropical locale. In the end, it didn't make it into my suitcase, but that had less to do with its practicality and more to do with my fear of lost luggage :) Looking forward to wearing it to Brunch tomorrow.

Recently, I spent some time with my two favorite people- my mother and little sister. It was my nephews First Birthday and I flew cross country to share in the celebration. It was quite the surprise to see how much they've both grown and changed.

There once was a time when my sister and I would tear through a store, scoring one fabulous find after another; now with the bundle in tow- we have to be very precise and calculated with our selections because the little man's tummy waits for no one! This dress was one of those snatch and dash pieces and fortunately for me, it fit and I loved it.

There's just no doubt about it, Spring has definitely sprung and it's just our good fortune that there isn't much else to do except settle into this precious season with ease. I picked up some fresh flowers last weekend, switched the linens from the jewel tones of Fall and Winter to the lighter, brighter hues of Spring and Summer; And this week, I'll be celebrating Cinco de Mayo with friends- I'm excited! More importantly though, I've inadvertently developed an obsession with devouring publications and podcasts related to various environmental issues and human interest stories. While I don’t exactly have a point of reference, with the exception of a handful of fashion bloggers who’ve rolled the dice on this look- Truth be told, I have fantasized about scoring a pair of leather shorts. Even if I only had the nerve to rock them in the privacy of my own home, they would be totally worth the cost of admission-- which in this case, was $9.99 to be exact...

One rushed Friday afternoon, one crammed clearance rack at Urban Outfitters, a split second decision, exactly one minute in the checkout line and they were mine. All things considered, a 97% discount is more than enough motivation to lose the 15 pounds necessary to look even ½ as good as Sarah Howard looks in hers.

Dear friends & family,

A couple of you asked about how we made our Earthquake kit so I figured I might as well send this to all of my peeps in "Earthquake Country". We made our kit using the list below and got a majority of these items at the 99 cent store - I marked them in RED to make your 99 shopping trip easier.

What to include in your Earthquake Kit

Non-perishable food items such as ready-to-eat items in unbreakable containers, canned meats, juice, fruits and vegetables, powdered milk, pet care, infant care, crackers, peanut butter, freeze-dried and dehydrated goods and high calorie power bars with a long shelf life.
Bottled water (they recommend a minimum of 1-gallon per person per day)
Battery-powered radio (small walkman radios can be found in the hardware isle)
First aid kit and manual (we made our own kit using stuff from the meds isle)
Sleeping bags and wool/thermal blankets
Manual can opener
Glow sticks (found these in the toy isle)
Flashlight and spare batteries
Water purification tablets
Utility knife (found in the kitchen utensil isle)
Emergency candles and matches (only use away from areas where there could be a potential gas leak)
Dust masks (found 10-packs of these in the hardware isle)
Essential medications
A print-out of everyone's telephone # in case of power outage where you can't charge your cell phone to look-up #'s
Extra pair of prescription glasses
Extra clothing and a pair of sturdy shoes

Additional Sanitation Items

Plastic bucket or trash can with tight fitting lid
Plastic bags and ties - these can double as tarps and rain ponchos
Waterless hand sanitizer
Wet wipes or baby wipes for waterless bathing
Paper cups and plates
Personal toiletries and hygiene products
Baby/infant supplies (maybe? We got baby wipes, so it's possible)
Aluminum foil
Paper towels
Plastic utensils
Soap
Work gloves

Think about your pets

Families also need to provide for the care of pets during emergencies by making sure there is sufficient dry pet food kept in tightly sealed containers, having a large capacity self-feeder for food and one for water, as well as extra medications.

Important Documents

Preparations for emergencies should also include secured but accessible copies of social security cards, driver/I.D., marriage licenses, home mortgage, property and vehicle ownership papers, insurance documents, wills, jewelry or other appraisals, birth certificates, bank account information and any other document that may be needed following a catastrophic event.

How to store your Earthquake Kit

Emergency supplies can be stored in a large, clean trash can with a cover (this is preferred since it can double as a toilet), plastic storage container, suitcase, duffle bag, backpack, etc.
As you can see, a majority of your kit can be purchased at the 99 or supplied with items you already have. Our kit for 2 people cost about $20-25 to make - waaaaay cheaper than buying one online.

Now let's hope we don't have to use them! Be safe. I love you all!

I've always thought of flats as a sort of staple in the wardrobes of the conservative and demure; those for whom high heels are considered 'special occassion' shoes, and most certainly not day wear. I understand that for many women, the issue is comfort- nothing more and nothing less so I'm speaking only for myself when I say that walking out the door in anything less than three inches is the equivalent of being bare foot, or worse yet, naked!

Which brings me to a couple of weekends ago, when the boy and I decided to peruse the racks at It's A Wrap. I don't know if it was the ombre, the reptile skin, the metallic, or the rose gold hardware, but something about the excess coaxed the love-to-hate relationship I have with flats right out of me- by way of my wallet.

Now, it's been three weeks since I took the plunge and I still haven't worn them but this Sunday's brunch-date might be their golden hour. I'm thinking of pairing a simple black romper with a black lace cardigan and something tells me that the shimmering wild of these flats might just be the light I need.

Happy Valentines Day, Lovelies!! This weekend has been MOST fantastic in every way. The weather has been amazing, I attended the first annual LA Street Food Fest yesterday (photos to come) and I'm currently indulging in a plate of banana pancakes as I share these words.

The second week of February has been good to me. Dine LA, otherwise known as Restaurant Week, kicked it off- followed by a friends Birthday celebration and a couple of very enjoyable lunches last week at Sawtelle Kitchen and Bar Hayama. Given the Blessing of time well spent, I'm actually feeling peace about being one of the few people who has to be at work tomorrow. . .

While on my last 'signal' during lunch-hour yesterday, I did a quick thrift run and scored an adorable 'Built By Wendy' yellow sheath dress with embroidered anchors AND an equally adorable, deer-print, v-neck Primp tee. Can't wait to test run that Wendy dress with a grey cardigan-- am sort of obsessed with that color-scheme right now.

This is the dress from the previous post and while I'm excited to finally get to wear it, I've found that it's a tricky little number. . . At any given angle, it either looks like I got a boob job or a butt lift-- and neither in a good way :( Oh well, it's comfortable and the length is work appropriate. I'll throw on a cropped leather jacket and see what gives.

P.S. Don't mind the shoes. I didn't intend to pair them with this dress, but I was traipsing around my house, intoxicated by the height of the heal and couldn't bear to take them off-- You understand :)

HUGE Saturday morning haul at the American Cancer Society Discovery Store! Do you have one in your neighborhood? Google it; there are amazing finds every now and then. This weekend, they hosted a designer sale with racks upon racks of BCBG pieces- Nothing over $10!!! I arrived a day late but still managed to score a few lovely additions to my ever-growing wardrobe. The fabric is a rich, thick, winter white and the details are gold which has me thinking I might have to debut it at a holiday party or two this year. "The Good China" is the title of a blog entry I wrote back in 7/23/07- in the days before blog awards, followers and outfit posts, but I wanted to share it with my new blog family. . .

There is a collective sense of apathy, with respect to our personal appearance, that is reverberating across mirrors and throughout closets worldwide. Save the obligatory sneaker and occasional flip flop, some of us have simply given up and given in to the slippery slope between the yoga pant in private and the pyjama bottom in public.

It's unfortunate and ironic that although we are taught not to care what others think of us, in every moment, we are unwittingly authorizing perceptions of ourselves that are inevitably affecting the regard to which our peers hold us, and the extent to which we are willing to go to perpetuate our best selves.

Giving care and consideration to the images we are projecting in our outward appearance is imperative because the compound effect of negligence and apathy, over time, could hinder our professional growth and the personal goals we've set for our lives.

Please consider this message a friendly reminder to put your best foot forward; wear your beautiful things with pride, and remember that your freedom, your health, your life today IS the special occasion.

I came pretty close to wearing the black version of this dress into the ground, so I snapped up the khaki one with what can only be described as a cat-like reflex just as soon as it crossed my path. No matter the occasion, it has never failed to disguise that extra 5 pounds that creeps up out of nowhere and make me feel like a lady, all the same.
